With all the information we carry with us on our smartphones, protecting that information is paramount. The easiest thing we can do to help protect ourselves is simply password protecting our devices. Whether it be a PIN number, password, or a pattern, password protecting your device is a solid first step in protecting yourself. However, that shouldn't be your only step.
If you own an Android device, consider using an anti virus application to help protect yourself against malicious downloads. Even with hackers targeting Android's open source platform, they are far and few between if you only download from the Android Marketplace but some still slip through. Apple iPhone and Blackberry users have less to worry about in that regard due to both of those OS's being closed.

When you're out and about and on public Wi-Fi, try not to access sensitive sites like your bank. You will be easy pickings for the lurkers out there waiting on someone to look up their balance. If you have to visit a site that has sensitive information about you, try using a SSH (Secure Shell) client to encrypt the data sent back and forth from your phone to whatever site you are visiting. Any smartphone becomes susceptible to open Wi-Fi, so choose your browsing wisely.

In the event you lose your phone or it's stolen from you, anti theft applications like Prey help you protect what's on your phone. After you install the application, it just sits there waiting for you to wake it up and tell it to go to work. Most applications can be contacted from the Internet or through SMS message. Once contact is initiated there are a few things you can do. First you can pinpoint exactly where your device is using the GPS capabilities of the phone. Once you know where it is you can then decide if you want to set off an alarm, send a message to the thief letting them know your hot on their trail, or lock the device until the proper password is entered. Some software will even let you wipe the data on the device so even if you never recover it, your data is no longer there for the taking.

These are great ways to help protect you and your information from getting in the wrong hands. Used together they make you a veritable Fort Knox against theft.
